Earlier this year it was announced that Jackson County residents whose local news stations had been reassigned to the Chattanooga television market would be switched back to Huntsville this fall. Amid the new Nielsen’s 2024-2025 Total Local TV market rankings, the Huntsville market showed significant growth, which is good news for residents in our area who relied on the Huntsville stations. The Huntsville-Decatur (Florence} Designated Market Area advanced to market 75, reflecting a six-mar¬ ket jump (+6) and one of the largest increases in recent years. The OMA growth is attributed to two primary factors: robust growth in the population of the Huntsville-Madi¬son-Decatur region and the reassignment of Jackson County to the Huntsville-Deca¬tur OMA. The county was briefly assigned to the Chattanooga OMA and returned to Huntsville effective with this year’s rankings reset. More than 50,000 residents in Jackson County rely on North Alabama television stations for severe weather coverage. Local and state leaders filed a market modification petition to the FCC on March 12, 2024, that addressed five points required by the FCC. The request was to modify the television stations WAAY, WAFF, WHNT, and WZZX to include Jackson County. Jackson County residents affected by the change should see it resolved by next Thursday, October 3, 2024.
