The Stevenson Council last Thursday heard from two more residents seeking to place homes on lots in the city. According to the city’s 2001 Mobile Home Ordinance, any mobile home brought in must be on a lot with an existing trailer, and the new home must have been built within the last five years. Because of the stipulations in the ordinance, which also does not allow for provisions, there are issues with both residents’ plans. In the first case, the resident had purchased a newly-built trailer, but the lot they are looking to move it to did not already have a mobile home present. They are already in a contract with the construction company, and if broken would still have to pay $90,000. The second family is looking to place a newly-built modular, double-wide home on a block foundation and create a driveway extending to the street. Since the existing ordinance does not include modular homes, Mayor Ricky Steele said the city will need to check if there is any law regarding their situation. Councilwoman Glenda Taylor said she is familiar with the lot in the second case that is near her land and is concerned for public safety due to regular flooding in the area and existing disturbances from nearby neighbors. In both cases, the council agreed to provide the city attorney with the information and to investigate what can be done in both situations. According to the mayor, the likely option would be to go through the process of creating and passing a new ordinance, which will take approximately six weeks to complete. The council also:
voted no to a request from the Jackson County Sentinel for a half page advertisement in the 2024 Graduation Section.
voted to not accept the recent HVAC offer.
announced the new crosswalk drawings have been submitted to the state for review. The council is expected to meet again April 11, 2024 at 6 p.m. in city hall.
