Staff Report
Roles are changing in the Alabama Senate with the resignation of Alabama Senate Majority Leader District 9 Senator Clay Scofield. His resignation was effective at the close of business on Monday, October 30. Scofield has served in the Senate since 2010 and was elected by colleagues as Majority Leader in 2020.
In a letter addressed to his constituents in Blount, DeKalb, Madison, and Marshall Counties, Scofield said he is resigning to take a position as the Executive Vice President of the Business Council of Alabama.
Scofield took the opportunity to thank his constituents for their support over the years. Scofield stated, “Thank you for taking a chance on a 30-year-old farm boy from Arab, AL. when you first elected me. Serving you as your State Senator for the past thirteen years has truly been the greatest honor of my life, and I hope that I have made you proud.”
On the same day, State Senator Steve Livingston (R-Scottsboro) was elected as Majority Leader by the Alabama Senate Republican Caucus in an official proceeding. The Republican Caucus emerged with a united decision to elect Livingston.
According to Grayson Everett with Yellowhammer News, Senator Livingston commented, “I am deeply humbled to be elected as the Republican leader in the Alabama State Senate. Having the trust of my colleagues and friends to lead our caucus in this capacity is a tremendous honor. Livingston had represented parts of Jackson, Madison, and DeKalb Counties in the Senate since 2014.
Livingston continued, “I am excited to work with my colleagues to continue implementing conservative values through our legislative agenda in the Senate and look forward to continuing our tireless work to uphold Alabama values that make our state the best place to call home.”
Livingston is a member of the Rules, Madison County Legislation, Finance and Taxation General Fund, Agriculture Conservation and Forestry, Banking and Insurance, and Transportation and Energy committees. His tenure as Majority Leader is effective immediately.
State President Pro Tempore Greg Reed was happy with the selection. Reed stated, “I am pleased with the election of Senator Livingston as Majority Leader of the Alabama Senate. Senator Livingston has an impeccable legislative record, and I am confident he will continue to make a positive impact on all Alabamians in his new role as Majority Leader. Senator Livingston and I have a wonderful working relationship and friendship. I look forward to working with him in this new role to build upon the work that the Republican Caucus has been doing to preserve and strengthen Alabama’s way of life and beliefs.”
