In Pisgah’s season opener against fellow Class 2A Sand Rock on Friday night, fans were in for a wild ride as back-and-forth lead changes became the norm. Pisgah earned the game’s first touchdown as senior Parker Law returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Sand Rock, however, would go on a 20-point scorestreak to close out the first quarter. Pisgah gained some momentum and evened the score only to be outdone by the Wildcats, who put up another 12-straight points to take a halftime advantage at 32-20.
Pisgah came out first in the second half as Sand Rock lost the ball, and the Eagles’ Legion McCrary turned the fumble into a 3-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to six. Back to Sand Rock, the Wildcats pushed the score gap to 14 by the end of the third quarter. Pisgah’s Mason Holcomb threw a touchdown pass and two-point conversion to Jake Hendricks in the fourth quarter. Coach Luke Pruitt drew up an onside kick on the following kickoff, which Pisgah’s Luke Gilbert recovered on the 42-yard line. The Eagles lost the ball three plays into the series on a fumble, but Sand Rock punted the ball back to the Eagles. Pisgah’s offense put together a 64-yard scoring drive to tie the game with 1:29 left before quarterback Holcomb found Rhyan Barrett on the two-point conversion pass to take the 42-40 lead. Sand Rock utilized their two-minute offense scheme and scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 27.9 seconds left and a 48-42 lead. Pisgah returned the kickoff to midfield, but Holcomb couldn’t find a receiver open with 20 seconds on the game clock. Fourth down for the Eagles resulted in a batted-down ball short of the endzone and a season-opening loss. Holcomb passed for 205 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, while McCrary led the Eagles with 147 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Pisgah (0-1) travels to Plainview (1-0) for a non-region matchup, but what has become a huge rivalry as former Bears Coach, Luke Pruitt now leads the Eagles.
