By Cinthia Rico SECTION – With an early surge, Pisgah defeated Section 50-20 to cap off Class 2A, Region 7 play.
The Eagles built a 44-point first-half cushion featuring touchdowns from Legion McCrary, Josh Varner, Luke Gilbert, and Fox Tinker.
Two minutes into the game, Pisgah’s defense produced an interception, and McCrary opened the Eagles’ lead to eight points with a 23-yard touchdown and a successful two-point conversion.
A few plays later, the Lions attempted a punt, but a high snap allowed the punter to roll out, leading to McCrary intercepting the pass and returning it for a Pisgah touchdown.
Pisgah’s next score came by way of McCrary, who rushed for a 30-yard touchdown, his final touchdown of the evening. Luke Gilbert intercepted a Josh Varner pass and returned it 70 yards to push the Eagles’ lead to 28.
Through two touchdown runs by Tinker from 12 and 3 yards out, Pisgah increased their advantage to 44 in the second quarter.
Section’s Alec Spurgeon set up Jackson LeRoy’s 24-yard touchdown to set the tone for the Lions’ second-half scoring.
In response, Pisgah’s Jackson Smalley found Mason Gass for a 40-yard touchdown, for a 50-7 score.
For the Eagles, Smalley had 216 throwing yards and one score. Gass led in receiving with 78 yards and a touchdown, while McCrary led the team in rushing with 53 yards and three touchdowns.
Varner paced the Lions with three interceptions, a score, and 48 throwing yards. He also had 121 rushing yards and a touchdown, while LeRoy gained 67 yards and two touchdowns.
This week, Pisgah (8-1, 6-1) hosts North Jackson (4-5, 4-3) to close out regular-season play at Sam Kenimer Stadium, while Section (2-8, 2-5) wrapped up their 2023 campaign.

Week 8 Recap: Pisgah Falls vs Fyffe in Class 2A, Region 7 Title Showdown
By Cinthia Rico FYFFE – With 25 carries for 364 yards and five touchdowns, Logan Anderson shattered the school record for most rushing yards in a single game as Pisgah fell 56-42 against Fyffe.
For Pisgah, Mason Holcomb was 19 of 33 for 238 yards passing and 81 yards rushing. Jakob Kirby had five catches for 101 yards, while Legion McCrary gained 75 rushing yards and had three receptions for 30 yards.
Gilbert hauled in six passes for 91 yards, while Jeff Jeffery had five passes for 59 yards for the Eagles.
The Red Devils finished with 515 total yards on 44 carries, while Pisgah had 442 yards. Combined, Fyffe and Pisgah accumulated almost 1,000 total yards and 43 first downs.
The highly anticipated match delivered a thrilling performance that kept spectators on edge from start to finish. With the region title on the line, players from both teams left their best on the field.
Early in the opening quarter, Pisgah converted a fourth-down from its own 38-yard line, and then Luke Gilbert hit Jakob Kirby for a 56-yard touchdown pass on a trick play, giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead.
Fyffe answered with a 60-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion from Anderson.
With 8:23 remaining in the second quarter, Gilbert caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from Mason Holcomb to trim the Fyffe lead to 16-12 after Anderson scored a 75-yard touchdown run and Ryder Gipson converted a two-point attempt to put Fyffe ahead.
At halftime, the Red Devils held a 24-20 advantage. Putting up 32 additional points in the second half, 10 of those were unanswered en route to a 56-42 final.
The win marks the 12th region championship in the last 13 years for Fyffe. According to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society, 42 points is the most the Red Devils have allowed since a 49-28 playoff loss to Fultondale in 2012.
Pisgah (7-1, 5-1) closes regional play against Section (2-7, 2-4) next week, (Nov. 3) at Section Stadium.
