The atmosphere was electric as Valley Head kicked off its season against North Sand Mountain in Higdon last Friday. In what can only be described as a nail-biting clash between the Tigers and the Bisons for dominance, Valley Head came out in a 45-33 victory. North Sand Mountain got things moving early in the game, when Landon Keller connected with Nelson Poore for a 44-yard touchdown, placing the Bisons’ on the scoreboard. Valley Head answered with Eian Bain rushing for a 74- yard touchdown. With 1:55 left of the first, the Bisons set up Hank Farmer, who plunged into the endzone for a 2-point conversion run. At the half, the Bisons led 14-7, gaining 78 yards in 13 plays. Hunter Robinson broke away on the left side for TD bringing the score 14-13, Valley Head trailing by one. NSM’s Hank Farmer drove up the middle for a touchdown and a good PAT with 7:56 remaining in the third. The Tigers answered with a phenomenal play featuring a last-second pass from Bain to Noah Hulgan for a TD run and a 2-point conversion bringing the score to a 21-21 tie. Third-quarter action continued as NSM’s Blake Hill caught a TD pass, giving the Bisons a 27-21 lead. Valley Head’s Bain broke free at 4:02 for a 13-yard Tiger touchdown, followed by a successful 2-point conversion that elevated the Tiger to a 29-27 at the end of the fourth quarter. Pushing forward NSM’s Keller connected with Poore for a 61-yard touchdown bringing the score to 37-33. The two teams continued to battle well into the final quarter. Valley Head finished with 402 yards of offense to NSM 356. Bain ran for 196 yards on 33 carries, completing all three passing attempts for 86 yards with zero interceptions, while Robinson carried nine times for 89 yards with one touchdown. NSM’s Keller finished with 9-of-21 passing for 206 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. While Farmer had 70 yard rushing, 13 carries and two touchdowns. Kayden Gilley tallied 53 yards on seven carries. Moore had 200 all-purpose yards, caught three passes for 33 yards and 68 yards rushing, while Poore caught two TD’s for 105 total yards. The Bisons host Dade County (Ga.) on Friday at 7 p.m.
