Story By Cinthia Rico The North Sand Mountain Golf team claimed its second state title, firing a 316 in the final round to win the Class 1A-2A Boys Golf State Championship at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s Grand National Lakes Course in Auburn.
The Bison finished 28 strokes in front of runner-up Elba High School. NSM compiled a 325 score to take the lead in the opening round.
In round two, Jarrett Hill shot a 4-over par 76, Blake Maples shot a 78, Kade Davis an 80, Brady Anderson an 82, and Duncan Wilks an 87.
Jarrett Hill, a junior shooter, tied for fourth place overall and led NSM by scoring a two round 11-over par 155. He scored a 7-over par 79 in round one and a 4-over par 76 in round two.
The championship marked the Bison’s first since 2019 behind a strong season performance.
Blake Maples, a sophomore, finished tied for sixth place by shooting a 6-over par score of 78 on both days, resulting in a total score of 12-over 156. Meanwhile, Brady Anderson, a freshman, came in 11th with a two-round score of 164 (82-82), followed by Kade Davis, another freshman, in 12th place with a score of 166 (86-80). Duncan Wilks, also a freshman, finished 17th with a score of 175 (88-87).
In a statement, NSM head coach Danielle Maples said she was thankful to be a part of a “great group” who worked hard this season to make themselves and each other better.
“They worked too hard this year to let it slip away,” she added. “I’m so excited for them and so proud of them.”
SCOTTSBORO BOYS FINISH AS CLASS 5A STATE RUNNER-UP
Staff Reports The Scottsboro boys golf team finished as the 2023 Class 5A Boys State runner-up at the Grand National Links Course two-day tourney in Auburn.
Making program history, boasting a best all-time state finish, the Wildcats compiled a team standing of 323 scores in round one, 329 in round two, and a 652 finish.
Scottsboro went head to head with Randolph who won the team competition to take the boys’ 5A state championship with a round of 299, finishing at 623.
Buckner Anderson, a sophomore, achieved a hole in-one on the first hole. He showed a significant improvement in his game, going from a round of 80 on the first day to 2-over 74 on Tuesday. This resulted in a total score of 154 for the 36 holes, earning him third place in the Class 5A boys competition.
Alongside him, seventh-grader Conner Hooper tied for eighth place with a two-round score of +19/163 (79-84). Junior Ethan Roberts followed in 11th place with a total score of 165 (78-87). Freshman Will Harrington took 15th place with a score of 170 (86-84), while junior Greyson Widgeon came in 23rd with a score of 187 (87-100) in the competition for Scottsboro.
