North Jackson Teams Sweep Tournaments

The North
Jackson Chiefs boys’ and girls’ basketball teams each had successful outings
last week, completing sweeps of their respective tournaments. Read below for the details.
Boys
The North
Jackson Chiefs participated in the Pisgah Thanksgiving Classic last week and
came through the event undefeated with wins over Boaz, Crossville, and
Clements. “We played really hard,” said
Chiefs head coach Zac Barringer. “Our
defense is what catapulted us through each game.”
North Jackson 74, Boaz 72
The Chiefs
controlled the game throughout, leading 16-10 at the end of the opening period,
29-23 at the half and 51-45 at the end of three. However, Boaz rallied in the final period and
a Pirate 3-point shot at the buzzer sent the game to overtime. In overtime, the Chiefs regained the lead and
held on for the win. Tyrus Jackson
scored 20 points to lead the way for North Jackson, followed by Zeke Ballard
with 18 and Eli Gill for 16.
North Jackson 69, Crossville 46
North Jackson struggled to a 10-4 deficit at the end of the first period
but rallied in the second to take a 20-19 halftime lead. The Chiefs continued to overpower the Lions
in the second half and led 44-35 at the end of the third frame. Carter Gass set the pace for the Chiefs with
19 points. Gass also hauled in six
rebounds and drew two charges. Gill
followed with nine points, seven rebounds and three steals. Brady Cunningham netted eight points and four
assists.
North Jackson 78, Clements 61
North Jackson completed their 3-0 run through the Pisgah Thanksgiving
Classic with their win over Clements.
The Chiefs took control early and never relented, leading Clements
24-16, 43-29 and 63-50 at the breaks.
Cunningham, Gass and Jackson each netted 16 points for North
Jackson. Gass added seven
rebounds while Cunningham contributed six rebounds and four steals. Gill posted 11 points, eight rebounds and
four steals, while Trayvon Nicholson had nine points, seven rebounds. Cade Reed netted six points and grabbed four
rebounds.
Girls
The North
Jackson girls’ basketball team might not be welcome in the state of Tennessee any
longer. Not to be outdone by the boys,
the North Jackson girls swept the Richard Hardy Thanksgiving Classic at South
Pittsburgh, Tennessee last week, posting a 3-0 record against South Pittsburgh (Tennessee), Sequatchie
County (Tennessee) and Grundy County (Tennessee). Read below to see how they pulled it
off. “I’m very proud of the girls. They played their hearts out during the
tournament,” said Chiefs head coach Tony Brown.
“They played together, as a team, and it paid off against three quality
opponents.”
North
Jackson 51, South Pittsburgh (Tenn.)

South Pittsburgh kept the game close in the first half. The Chiefs led 13-11 after one period and
25-21 at halftime. The Chiefs controlled
the second half however, taking a 39-27 lead at the end of the third frame and
winning by 16 points. Summer Varnum set
the pace for North Jackson with 21
points. Sarah Morgan netted 10 points,
followed by Hadley Burnette and Delana Pierce with eight each.
North
Jackson 56, Sequatchie County (Tenn.)

The Chiefs
trailed 11-10 at the end of the opening period but took a 29-27 lead into halftime
and 42-33 at the end of the third period.
North Jackson had to go 14-of-19 at the foul line down the stretch to
hold off Sequatchie Valley. Varnum led the way again for the Chiefs with
21 points, followed by Morgan with 12, Burnette with nine and Alexis Moore with
seven.
North
Jackson 58, Grundy County 49 (Tenn.)
North
Jackson ended their tournament sweep with a win over Grundy County. The Chiefs led 15-9 at the end of the first
period and 28-25 at halftime. The second
half was no different with North Jackson
leading 46-38 after three. Once again,
Varnum led the Chiefs with 17 points.
Moore and Pierce netted 12 each.
Burnette chipped in six, followed by Moore with five and Paige Dunn with
three.
If that
wasn’t enough hoop success, the North Jackson boys and girls gave an encore
performance on Tuesday night, knocking off the Richard Hardy Memorial School
by scores of 83-41 and 79-36 respectively.
