Staff Report JACKSON COUNTY – Each year, October brings changing leaves, cooler, shorter days, and football. For Medicare recipients, October also ushers in the Fall Open Enrollment Period, which begins on October 15th and runs through December 7th. You have the right to change your current health and drug coverage during this time. It’s important to closely examine your current coverage. Are you satisfied with your coverage? Will there be any changes in your plan costs or benefits for the upcoming year? If you’re satisfied with your plan and there are no changes, you don’t need to do anything. Your coverage will remain the same for 2024. Be sure to assess your needs. A specific plan might be a good fit for your neighbor, but the same plan may not be a good choice for you. It may sound great if your plan’s premium won’t increase in 2024, but did the deductible? Have your health needs changed? Have there been changes with health care professionals you see? What about the medications you take? You may not realize how beneficial a plan comparison could be. A plan may be available that better suits your current needs. Remember, any change could affect your overall out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Savings Programs (MSP) may help pay these costs and is available to those who qualify through the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP). For more information or assistance with plan enrollment, benefit explanation, plan comparisons, or to apply for Medicare Savings Programs, contact your local SHIP Coordinator, Veronica Woodall, at the Jackson County Council on Aging at 256-259-9911 SHIP services are FREE!
