On December 14, 2021, Stevenson Mayor Rickey Steele spoke at the Mountain Lakes Chamber of Commerce Breakfast. The meeting was held at the Depot Restaurant in Stevenson.
Before Mayor Steele spoke, City Clerk Monica Davis expressed her sadness at the loss of James “Jr.” Rorex, a city employee who passed away on Monday. She asked for prayers for his family in this time of loss.
Mayor Steele also shared his sadness at the passing of his longtime friend and colleague. Steele then updated everyone on the happenings in Stevenson. Steele said, “The girls’ softball team won the 4A State Softball Championship this year, and several residents got together to help buy their rings. Now the North Jackson Cheerleaders have won the 4A State Cheer Championship, and now we are going to buy them rings.” Steele also spoke of more plans to assist the youth of the area. He said that they are building a practice facility for the girls’ softball team. Steele stated, “Actually, Jr. was always the one who was my right arm at the park as far as building things and keeping the fields going. He was in the middle of building a room with a pitching machine and nets hanging everywhere so approximately 30 kids could practice in the same room. We already have one for the boys. I don’t know how fast we can build it now that Jr. is gone. He will be missed. He worked really hard at getting the park’s light display ready. It is the best light display in North Alabama that is free.”
The Mayor spoke about plans for next year for Stevenson. He said, “If plans don’t change, we plan to build a park downtown (nicknamed Steele Park) and behind it a building to house items showing the history of Stevenson.” He went on to say that during Depot Days, the City plans to have various military uniforms on display at the Depot. Several different uniforms have been promised for the event. Mayor Steele said that two other items he would like to see completed, and he would be happy if they could complete at least one, is the completion of a fifty slot RV park with a sewer system and 25 boat slips added to the park.
