By Cinthia Rico SCOTTSBORO – The Mars Hill Panthers delivered a heartbreaking defeat to Scottsboro last Friday, scoring a late touchdown and taking the lead on a 2-point conversion with less than three minutes remaining in the game at Trammell Stadium.
The Wildcats, who finished 4-1 in area play, will share the region title with Guntersville and Arab.
Jacobi Edmondson led Scottsboro with 118 rushing yards, while Keelan Alvarez had 53 yards on 10 carries. Jake Jones completed 4 of 5 passes for 35 yards, gained 23 yards, and scored two touchdowns, while kicker Cole Raeuchle completed 5 of 5 PATs for the Wildcats.
Scottsboro scored on each of its three first-half possessions, covering 59, 74, and 65 yards. Jones scored the Wildcats’ first touchdown with a 4-yard run 9:20 into the first quarter.
Mars Hill scored a touchdown run by Skyler Sterling, tying the score at 7-all midway through the frame. However, Jones connected with Kyle Right on a 7-yard touchdown pass to reclaim the lead.
Three plays later, Jackson Tingle and Griffin Henson connected for a 55-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.
The two continued trading scores, battling for dominance at every turn. Jones capped a 13-play drive with a scoring run from 7 yards out as Scottsboro held a 21-14 halftime advantage.
The Panthers jumpstarted the second half with a J.O. Owens 3-yard scoring run, and Scottsboro answered with a Jayden Gilbert 3-yard touchdown.
Entering the fourth quarter, Mars Hill’s Caden Chandler ripped a 56-yard scoring run, and Parker Kennamer’s point-after tied the game at 28.
Midway through the third quarter, JC Heikkinen’s 50-yard kickoff return propelled the Wildcats past the Panthers, but Mars Hill fought back, marching 80 yards to bring the score to 35-34. Jay Dobbs then added a 2-point conversion to seal the Panthers victory.
This week, Scottsboro (7-2) welcomes Decatur (3-6) to Pat Trammell Stadium to wrap up regular-season play.
Week 8 Recap: Scottsboro Dominates Douglas in HOCO Win
Staff Reports SCOTTSBORO – The Wildcats secured a 49-28 homecoming victory with a first-half surge against Douglas last Friday.
Improving to a 7-1 overall record and 4-1 in Class 5A, Region 7 standings, Scottsboro closed out regional play on a high note.
The Wildcats finished with 317 total yards, Jacobi Edmondson led with 109 yards on eight carries and a touchdown, and Jake Jones gained 132 yards with three touchdowns.
Late in the first quarter, Scottsboro’s Jones connected with Jayden Gilbert on a 43-yard touchdown pass to take the 7-0 lead. The Eagles tied the game as Walls found Brody Campbell for a touchdown.
After Keelan Alvarez scored a touchdown on a 7-yard run, Reed Potter returned an interception for a touchdown, and Jones, the quarterback keeper, added a 5-yard scoring run, Scottsboro exploded for 35 unanswered points in the second quarter.
Douglas’ fourth-quarter comeback attempt was unsuccessful, and the Wildcats won 49-28 in the end.
