By Staff Governor Kay Ivey visited Scottsboro Water, Sewer, & Gas on Friday, September 2, 2022, bringing exciting news to Jackson County. Using funds from the American Rescue Plan, Gov. Ivey awarded $14.8 million to the Scottsboro WSG to help solve the water issues in the county. The $14.8 million is a portion of the $225 million allocated to Alabama to correct the state’s water and sewer infrastructure problems. Governor Ivey and Senator Steve Livingston spoke to officials during the Friday meeting. Ivey explained that there are problems with aging infrastructure statewide. Thanks to the Rebuild Alabama Act, problems with roads and bridges have already begun to be addressed across the state. Ivey said that water and sewer infrastructure was in serious need of long-term investments and have often been overlooked because the physical rewards to investment are not visible but lie buried underground. Ivey told those presents that the county would have clean water for decades with the addition of the $14.9 million to use for repairs. Ivey said, “We all need clean water – our businesses, our homes – we want our families to live and thrive, so it’s critical we stay on top of it and invest our funds from the federal government wisely, not just spend feverishly. I’m proud you all are taking the lead, and I look forward to the clean water we will have.” Ivey added that the announcement comes as a crisis continues to unravel for those in Jackson, Mississippi, where hundreds of thousands were left with little to no water because of poor systems that were then overwhelmed by severe flooding. The Governor said that the same crisis would not happen in Alabama.
