By Cinthia Rico WOODVILLE – The Woodville Panthers broke a 15-game losing streak last Friday night defeating Cedar Bluff 37-27.
The Panthers collected their first Class 1A Region 7 win of the season surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd at Frazier Field.
Woodville senior quarterback Sam Peek started the scoring on the third play of the game, Peek ran 63 yards untouched into the end zone to give Woodville a 6-0 advantage.
Cedar Bluff answered with Hunter Jenkins scoring from two yards out, following a 16-play drive that began midway in the first quarter. A few plays later, Kaden Pack connected with Matthew Baty for a touchdown run.
Ace Weaver returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a Woodville touchdown. Peek converted the two-point try and the Panthers lead 14-13 at the half.
Weaver returned the kickoff 43 yards to around the 37-yard line and then scored from15 yards out as Woodville continued to make offensive strides.
Woodville added three more scoring runs in the second half, including a 34-yard touchdown from Weaver.
With 174 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 24 touches, Peek led the Panther attack. Additionally, he completed 7 of his 14 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown.
With the win, Woodville improves to a 2-0 overall record and a 1-0 regional record.
Tonight, Woodville travels to Appalachian (2-1) to continue regional play at James E. Carr Stadium in Oneonta.
Lions Fall to Collinsville in Region Play
By Cinthia Rico SECTION – Mason McAteer led the Panthers to a 39-6 victory over Section in the Class 2A Region 7 opening game at Section Stadium last Friday.
McAteer completed 7-of-13 pass attempts for 186 yards and two touchdowns. In addition, he scored twice while gaining 40 yards on five carries.
On a 1-yard run in the first quarter, Kyler Beene gave the Panthers their first score. With 8:36 remaining in the second quarter, quarterback Josh Varner scored the game-tying touchdown for the Lions on a 4-yard run.
Following McAteer’s 9-yard touchdown run and a successful Aaron Hererra extra point with 3:47 left in the half.
The Panthers added three more scores to win the game, and Quintavious Rogers rushed for a 23-yard score in the fourth for a 39-6 final.
Varner had more than 100 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries to lead the Lions. He also completed a 53-yard pass.
Tonight, Section (3-0) travels to Sand Rock (3-0) for their second regional matchup at Russell Jacoway Stadium.
