SCOTTSBORO, ALA. – Spectators visiting Goose Pond Colony on August 10, 2024, were privileged to witness the first official Dragon Boat Races held on Lake Guntersville. Participants met at Goose Pond for a day of healthy competition and a chance to serve the community. The event was a fundraiser sponsored by Nourish One Child and Highlands Medical Center. It was open to all ages and skill levels. Twenty-two member teams worked together to race 46-foot traditional Hong Kong-style dragon boats along Lake Guntersville. Twenty seated rowers provided arm power, a person in the front drummed rhythms to row by, and a steerer in the back guided the boat. Over twenty teams participated, providing needed funds for the two organizations. Every paddler who raised at least $100 or team that reached the team goal of $2,500 received an event t-shirt. The team that raised the most funds received an award. The Highlands’ Stork Squad was crowned the Grand Champion of the competition. Nourish One Child plans to use its portion of the proceeds to provide needed food to Jackson County children suffering from food insecurity, and Highlands Medical Center plans to use the proceeds to support its radiology/imaging department. The City of Scottsboro commented, “From the fierce competition on the water to the cheering crowds on the shore, it was a day full of excitement, camaraderie, and fun. We are so thankful to Nourish One Child and Highlands Medical Center for partnering to create such an unforgettable experience. We’re already looking forward to next year!” Life’s Mirror Images Photography provided pictures of the event.
