SCOTTSBORO- Dr. Clyde Wilson Butler, Jr. of Scottsboro, has been awarded the Paul W. Bryant Alumni-Athlete Award. Individuals receive this award based on their character, contributions to society, professional achievement, and service to fellow men. Butler joins an impressive group of former award winners, including John Croyle, Bart Starr, Ozzie Newsome, Lee Roy Jordan, Jeremiah Castille, and Sylvester Croom.
Rick Roden, President of the Jackson County Bama Club, stated, “Clyde has served for many years on the Executive Committee of the Jackson County Bama Club. He is always willing to do anything to help, and we are so proud of him! This award is well deserved.”
Dr. Butler is a Scottsboro High School class of 1966 graduate. In 1971, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Alabama, and in 1975, he earned a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. He has been a self-employed dentist since 1975 and a Highlands Medical Center staff member for over thirty years.
He has numerous volunteer activities. They are Scottsboro Library board; Rural Health Board of Jackson County; Leadership Jackson County/Second class; Chairman of Stevenson Chapter of the Mountain Lakes Chamber of Commerce; Alabama Ducks Unlimited state sponsor Chairman; Lifetime Ducks Unlimited sponsor: Chairman of North Jackson Ducks Unlimited Chapter; Scottsboro City School Board; Executive Board of Alabama School Board Members representing four northeast Alabama counties; President of the Jackson County Chapter of Alabama Alumni Association for seven years; Executive Committee of Jackson County Chapter of the Alabama Alumni Association; Paul Harris Fellow of the Scottsboro Rotary Club; Scottsboro Parks and Recreation Board for Goose Pond Colony Resort; former Scottsboro High School Quarterback Club President.
His honors and awards also include being a University of Alabama Football Letterman (1970), being granted lifetime University of Alabama A-Club status, being a 2019 Distinguished Member of the Jackson County Chapter of the Alabama Alumni Association, and being inducted into the Jackson County Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2021.
He is married to Cindy Rosemore Butler, and they have two children – Bentley Butler Hess and Clyde Butler, III. They also have two grandchildren, Hunter Hess and Hatten Hess.
