Governor Kay Ivey has proclaimed the week of September 17-23 as Constitution Week in the State of Alabama. This year is the 234th Anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States.
Through out America the Daughters of the American Revolution in every State will be drawing attention to this great document which insures the freedoms of speech, press, assembly, the right to bear arms, and the right to worship as we see fit. These are not the only protections guaranteed in the Constitution. As American citizens we enjoy these freedoms every day, but these are not to be taken for granted. Thomas Sowell once warned, The Constitution cannot protect us unless we protect the Constitution.” Citizens need to know the rights the Constitution gives them and to be ever mindful to guard them zealously.
Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of this great nation lived under English rule where these precious freedoms were not guaranteed. He authored the Declaration of Independence. He lived under a powerful monarchy and he realized the dangers of too much power in the hands of government. He wrote in regard to the Constitution, “The greatest danger to American freedom is a government that ignores the Constitution.”
October 17-23 is Free Speech Week. In 2003 the Media Institute said that Freedom of the Pres Week “was designed as a unifying celebration, elevating the vision of the Founding Fathers above the political fray and recognizing free speech as something we can all believe in and cherish.”
The wise statesman, Benjamin Franklin, believed and wrote that “whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freedom of speech.”
