Benson To Run For Circuit Judge
Brent Benson announced his
intention to run for Circuit Judge on the March 3 Republican Primary. Brent currently serves Jackson County as the
Chief Assistant District Attorney. He
grew up in the Aspel community and graduated from Scottsboro High School. Benson graduated from the University of
Alabama; Summa Cum Laude, with a BS in Management. After college, he attended the University of
Tennessee College of Law. Brent has been
licensed to practice law in both Alabama and Tennessee since 2007.
Brent is married to Anna Wells
Benson, who teaches Special Education at Skyline, and is the father of Henley
and Vance. He is the son of the late
Mike Benson and Cindy Benson Shelton, step-son of Brad Shelton, son-in-law of
Kenneth and Rebecca Wells.
“In 2009, I returned to Jackson County because I felt called to serve the people here. I realized that without everything Jackson County gave to me, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I am passionate about Jackson County and serving the people here. During my career, I have represented individuals and businesses in everything from estate law, child support, civil lawsuits, and divorces to large contracts and business deals. However, the most rewarding period of my career has been serving the citizens of Jackson County.”
As Chief Assistant
District Attorney, he helps supervise two other assistant district attorneys,
while managing his own caseload of over 3,500 pending cases.
“I
prosecute criminal cases at every level,” said Benson. “I’ve tried numerous
jury cases, and I file civil lawsuits to condemn the proceeds of illegal
activity. To me, serving as Circuit
Judge is about giving back to the people of this county through service. I care about Jackson County, and I care about
the County we are leaving our children and grandchildren. Your Circuit Judge must exercise
self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation, must be well respected, must have integrity,
and must use common sense. I believe
these qualities describe me.”
Benson
is a member of First Baptist Church in Scottsboro, where he has served as a
deacon, moderator, and committee chairman.
He has also volunteered with numerous community organizations and at the
school systems.
“I’m really excited about this opportunity to serve the people of Jackson County,” said Benson. As your Circuit Judge, I will strive to live up to Micah 6:8 ‘…seek justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.’ I appreciate your vote on March 3, 2020, to elect me as Jackson County Circuit Judge.”
