The Scottsboro Wildcats were on the cusp of winning their first region game of the season Friday night against Springville, but the Tigers kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired, taking the 24-21 victory. Springville’s Ashton Frye scored the Tigers two touchdowns, 1-yard, and 11-yards, to build a 14-0 halftime lead during the first half.
Scottsboro used the break to get their game plan down and, on the opening possession, drove 78 yards on seven plays to set up Gavin McCrary’s 1-yard rushing touchdown to close the gap 14-6. After the Wildcats suffered a muffed punt, Springville went up 21-6. But the Cats’ Landon Grider punched in a 3-yard touchdown run to pull within 21-13 with 10:20 remaining in the game. Scottsboro’s next possession resulted in a fumble on the 1-yard line, but Will Dukes came up with an interception to give the Wildcats a shot at tying the game. Scottsboro drove 25-yards on four plays before Keelan Alvarez rushed in from 5-yards out to pull within two points. Thomas Rackler dove in the endzone for the extra two points and tied the game. Springville took over with 1:35 remaining, and after the Tigers were penalized 5 yards for a delay of game penalty, they kicked the winning field goal.
McCrary ran for 137 yards on 18 carries for Scottsboro, which had a season-high 287 rushing yards. Grider had 66 yards on 17 carries, Rackler had 66 yards on six carries, and Alvarez had 28 yards on nine carries. Scottsboro heads into a bye week and will prepare to travel for the Top Cat game against Fort Payne (1-3, 1-1) on October 1.
