Staff Report HUNTSVILLE, ALA- On August 17, Main Street, Alabama, held its tenth annual Awards of Excellence Banquet at Stovehouse in Huntsville to celebrate the successes of local programs. Alabama Municipal Electric Authority and Alfa Companies sponsored this banquet. Main Street Alabama’s President and State Coordinator, Mary Helmer Wirth, and Assistant State Coordinator, Trisha Black, recognized projects and individuals who significantly contributed to their communities. The Awards of Excellence program highlighted the tremendous impacts of these honorees in their respective areas. Local Main Street programs also selected a Main Street Hero that honored an individual, business, or organization that made an outstanding contribution to their program. The Main Street Scottsboro Hero Award went to Julie Gentry-Michaels (in memorial) – Julie Gentry-Michaels served on the board for Main Street Scottsboro and the Main Street Design Committee. She retired from Scottsboro City Schools, where she taught first grade and kindergarten for many years. After her retirement, she served as the director of Cumberland Presbyterian’s Mother’s Day Out program. She also served on the board for Scottsboro City Schools. She was a long-time member of Scottsboro Woman’s League and Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Scottsboro Main Street greatly missed their friend and wanted to show their appreciation to her family for all she meant to them. Downtown Scottsboro also received the Excellence in Business Development award for its Networking Socials and the Reinvestment Award for $1 million in reinvestment.
