As a review, since we are still talking about the same subject I wanted to include this again. 1 Peter 3:1-6 “1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; 2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. 3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: 6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.”
In I Timothy 2:9-15 Paul advised “9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; 10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. 11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. 12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. 15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.”
The similarities in these scriptures are there because they came from the same place, not because they had cell phones or email and could communicate with each other, or that they were together when they wrote these scriptures, because they were not. They had gone their separate ways doing the work of the Lord. The similarities are there because it came from the spirit of the Almighty God and the spirit is always true. Since both men followed the leadership of that spirit, the spirit spoke the same thing to each one.
1 Peter 3:5-6 tells us that the holy women of old who trusted in God, adorned themselves in a godly manner and were willing to be subject to their husbands. Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord (not the Lord, but her natural leader or head of the family). This writer understands that the liberal society of modern America teaches women to be strong and independent. That within itself is not a bad thing. However, when it is carried so far as the woman becoming contentions (as discussed last week in Proverbs 19:13 “13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.” and Proverbs 27:15 “15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.”), then it becomes wrong. Be advised, I do not make the rules, God does. Our job is to follow the rules. The Bible is full of examples of what happens when we don’t follow God’s rules.
