I’m going to retell my UFO story, and you’ll understand why. (No, not because I’m crazy.) In 1995, six years after the Fyffe event, I was home from Montgomery, visiting Mom and Dad in Blake. Dad stepped out onto the front porch to smoke and called for me and Mom. We walked out and saw it. It was a huge light, like a very bright star hovering way back over the woods.
Suddenly, it started to rise upward so high it became just a little pinpoint of light amongst the stars. It stayed there for an hour. Mom and Dad became bored and went back inside, but I couldn’t take my eyes off that tiny white speck in the night sky. Finally, it started coming back down and getting bigger. I called Mom and Dad back out, and we watched it fly right over our house so close Kelly Bunch could have hit it with a football.
When I would tell people the story, I’d hold my hand out flat, palm down, and move it back and forth to show them how the light moved left and right as it flew. They, of course, would look at me with the same expression you probably have right now reading this.
Now, yesterday I was watching an old clip of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson from September 1973. His guests were Ken Norton and Muhammed Ali. They were wearing robes, and Johnny was going to have an unofficial weigh-in. They were meeting in the ring a week later for their second fight. So, it was clearly supposed to be about boxing.
As soon as Ali sat down, however, out of the blue (no pun intended), he started talking about UFOs. Everyone was surprised, especially Johnny. Try as he might, Carson couldn’t get Ali off that topic, as the greater boxer in history could not stop talking about his fascination. He then described what he had witnessed.
Paraphrasing, he said, “I saw this light that looked like a bright star. Then it rose up so high it was just a tiny pinhole of light in the sky. When it came down, it flew…” At this point, he held his hand out, palm down, and moved it right to left. “…moving back and forth like this.”
Johnny stared at him in disbelief just as I was staring at my computer screen watching this yesterday. That was my UFO, and he told the story exactly how I used to. Johnny asked, “If it is beings from another planet, why don’t they make contact?”
Ali just shrugged and answered, “Probably can’t make sense out of anybody here.” I understand. I have that same problem.
