The Scottsboro Wildcats edged Guntersville 67-66 to claim the 2023 Class 5A Boys Northeast Regional title last Wednesday at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Tyson Sexton led the Wildcats with 20 points, Parker Bell netted 13 points, including eight rebounds, Seth Whitmire added 12 points, Jake Jones tallied eight points, and Ethan Roberts and Kyle Wright each had seven points.
Scottsboro’s Parker Bell and Tyson Sexton (MVP) were named to the All-Tournament team alongside Moody’s David Dozier, Springville’s Brodie Frederick, Guntersville’s Brandon Russell and John Michael McElrath.
The two teams delivered a strong start placing more than 13 points on the board apiece in the opening quarter. Ethan Roberts leaped for two points as the Wildcats offensive efforts continued into intermission.
At the half, Scottsboro led 26-25. The Wildcats offense kicked it into high gear with Parker Bell netting a 3-pointer followed by a Tyson Sexton layup making it 25-31 early in the third. Scottsboro tallied 25 points, while limiting Guntersville to 14 points.
Guntersvilled put together a last quarter surge adding 27 points in the fourth quarter. However, the Wildcats held their ground, and with 10 seconds left of regulation play, Kyle Wright shot a successful free throw to claim the title.
Scottsboro moved on to the state semifinal round, where they faced Valley Regional champion for a spot in the 5A state championship game on Wednesday at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena in Birmingham. Editor’s Note: The game was not completed before press time.
