Scottsboro edged Guntersville 17-14 in a battle for dominance last Thursday night at Trammell Stadium. The win marks the first in six years against Guntersville. With the victory, the Wildcats improved to a 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the region. Despite the odds, Scottsboro brought its A-game and delivered a gut-wrenching performance, as their defense had two turnovers and Landon Wright recovered a Guntersville fumble. Andrew Smith intercepted the ball in the second quarter, setting up Jake Jones for a 19-yard touchdown run, making it 7-0. A few plays later, Jones connected with Thomas Stewart on a 27-yard pass at the 8-yard line. A penalty on Guntersville allowed Cole Raeuchle to kick a 20-yard field goal for a 10-0 Scottsboro halftime advantage. At the 4:25 mark of the third, Guntersville rallied as Julyon Jordan broke free up the middle for a 61-yard touchdown run, cutting the score 10-6. Scottsboro kept their head in the game as Keelan Alvarez rushed for a 12-yard touchdown run at the 8:32 mark. Raeuchle’s point after further their lead to 17-6. On their next possession, Guntersville upped their passing game as they pushed to the 16-yard line, capping the drive with a touchdown with 4:20 left of the fourth, making it 17-14. Alvarez finished for 118 yards on 25 carries for Scottsboro. Jones had 17 carries for 69 yards and went 5 of 9 passes for 63 yards. Scottsboro hosts Sardis (3-3) for a Class 5A, Region 7 matchup on Friday.
