Staff Reports Appalachian defeated Woodville 47-8 during last Thursday’s Class 1A, Region 7 game. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in their region. Sam Peek led Woodville with 105 rushing yards on 31 carries, completing 7-of-16 passes for 52 yards. The Panthers managed 21 total yards in the first half to Appalachian (2-2,1-0) 236 total yards on 17 plays. The Eagles got things moving in the opening frame when Seam Curtis connected with Garrett Helms for a 78-yard touchdown pass. Curtis extended their lead rushing 38 yards for the Eagles’ next score before connecting with Helms on a 13-yard touchdown pass. Braden Gilliand added another first-half touchdown for Appalachian in the second quarter building a 33-0 halftime lead. The Curtis and Helms duo completed their fourth touchdown pass in the third, expanding their lead to 41-0. Woodville’s Peek picked up the Panthers’ lone touchdown and cut the score to 41-6 early in the fourth. The Eagle’s Chris Heekin ended the scoring with an 80-yard run with seconds left of the game. Curtis was 8 of 9 passing for 171 yards and four touchdowns, Helms caught five passes for 81 yards. The Panthers take on Vina (0-2) this week. The two teams last met in 2015, when Woodville fell 6-56. Woodville looks for a win as they host Vina for a non-region matchup Friday.
