On July 25, 2022, the Bridgeport City Council met. Mayor Hughes expressed his sympathy and asked everyone to remember the family of Robert Westmoreland who recently passed away in prayer. Westmoreland was a dispatcher for twenty-five years and served the City of Bridgeport for 13. Mayor Hughes said he would be missed.
During the meeting, the Council voted to approve a one-time lump sum payment to City retirees of $2.00 for every month worked. The payment was made possible through a matching grant program, with the City’s portion being $2,822.00. It also approved purchasing two ads from the Jackson County Sentinel at a total cost of $255.00.
Jeffrey Davis was moved from part-time to full-time employee, and the Council agreed to purchase a new John Deere tractor with a bucket to replace two pieces of old equipment that no longer works. The price of the tractor was $77,000.00.
The Council took one final action and approved Resolutions 7-25-2022A and 7-25-2022B granting property abatements to Phyll Roland for property he purchased in Bridgeport. Roland will be extempt from paying property tax on the land for ten years. If he builds any business on the property, the City will still receive sales tax revenue from the business.
At the end of the meeting, the Council and a few citizens discussed the need to encourage everyone to clean up eyesores in the community and asked that people properly dispose of trash to keep it from blowing onto someone else’s property.
The next meeting will be on August 8, 2022.
