MONTGOMERY – The North Boys and Girls Golf All-Stars swept the South at Arrowhead Golf Club Course in the first all-star event of the 2022 AHSAA All-Star Sports Week competition in mid-July. All-Star contests for baseball, softball, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, soccer, cross country, and tennis are scheduled this week in conjunction with the AHSAA Summer Conference for member school coaches and administrators this week. The North girls won the match-play golf match 47-25, sweeping three matches and tying one. The North boys won 62.5 – 27.5 with a 5-0 sweep of its five matches. The North-South All-Star Baseball doubleheader at Riverwalk Stadium was still underway Monday night after a brief rain delay. Shawnise Gregory of Homewood and Ally Beth Waldrop of Jasper won their match over sisters Abby and Anna King of Mary Montgomery 12-5 – 5.5. Mary Charles Davis of Cullman teamed with Abby Hambrick of Scottsboro to defeat Ansleigh Davis of Westminster-Oak Mountain and Ansley Burks of Central-Phenix City 13-5, Gabi Nicastro of Huntsville and Grace Engel of Grissom combined to win a tough 10-5 – 7.5 match over Virginia Anne Holmes of Trinity Presbyterian and Tori Waters of UMS-Wright. The South salvaged a tie in the fourth match with Pike Road’s Yvette Gorden and Daphne’s Eza Velazquez tied Gracee Prince of James Clemens and Ava Schwartz of Huntsville 9-9. The boys match results included Tristan Wisener of Hartselle and Will Gaddy of Bob Jones edging Henry Lanham of St. Paul’s Episcopal and Braxton Bonner of UMS-Wright in the closest match of the competition, 9.5 – 8.5. Jay Clemmer of Class 7A state champion Vestavia Hills and Ian Willoughby of Cullman combined to beat River Friend of Leeds and Dawson Criswell 11.5 – 6.5 in match two; Morgan Slaton II of Huntsville and Austin Freeman of Hewitt-Trussville combined to win match 4 15-5 – 2.5 over the Montgomery Academy duo of Breland Burnham and McRae Foshee; Haleyville’s Jake Temple and Weaver’s Nicklaus Ledbetter beat Smiths Station’s Jackson Williams and Enterprise’s Jackson Bailey 11-7 in match 4; and in match 5, Nolen Wolfe of Athens and Brant White of Haleyville downed Gunner Newburn of Citronelle and Cameron Williams of Theodore 15-3. The North girls own a 2-1 lead in the series and the North boys are 3-0. Golf was added to All-Star Sports Week in 2018. No all-star games were played in 2020 due to the Covid 19 pandemic. The All-Star Sports Week and Summer Conference is managed by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association (AHSADCA) and the AHSAA.
