In today’s economy with prices rising daily, many families find it difficult to make ends meet. There are organizations in the area formed to assist during difficult times.
The Community Action Partnership is an organization serving families in Blount, Cherokee, DeKalb, Jackson, Marshall, and St. Clair counties.
For assistance, Jackson County residents should contact the Scottsboro office located at 27115 John T. Reid Parkway, Suite #1, Scottsboro, AL 35769. The phone number is 256-259-5357.
The Partnership provides several different services that are described on its website.
The Low Income Energy Assistance Program is available on a one-time basis to low-income families to meet the heating and cooling energy costs and prevent energy from being terminated in health crises. Funds are paid directly to utility companies and vendors.
A second program offered is the Neighbor Helping Neighbor Program.
This program provides utility assistance for eligible individuals and families funded by Sand Mountain Electric. Neighbor helping neighbor is a collective effort made by community members. Those who are financially able may give to others by participating in this program to help those struggling to survive.
The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) enables low-income families to reduce their energy bills by making their homes more energy-efficient. Funds are used to improve the energy performance of dwellings families in need, using the most advanced technologies and testing procedures available in the housing industry.
Project Help is another program that gives utility assistance to eligible individuals and families funded by Scottsboro Electric Power Board. Like the program above, customers who can help others are asked to donate directly through their electric account to help those who can’t make it alone.
Many seniors face food insecurity issues. The Farmers Market Nutrition Program provides a $30 voucher for seniors 60 years of age or older. There is also assistance for seniors with the Project Senior Help Program. It provides utility assistance for eligible indivduals and families, and the funds are provided by Bridgeport Utilities and the Scottsboro Water, Sewer, and Gas Board.
The Emergency Food & Shelter Program (EFSP) grants utility assistance and/or rent assistance to eligible individuals and families.
The Jackson County, United Givers Fund, is involved in the Partnership. It provides deposits for rent, electricity, water, and gas for eligible individuals and families. Medical and dental needs are also funded. Dental work is offered in Partnership with the SMILES program.
