In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week to celebrate EMS practicioners and the important work they do in our nation’s communities. Since that time, the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) and the American College of Emergency Physicians(ACEP) have teamed up to honor EMS professionals with various celebrations and community events.
“Emergency Medical Service professionals are dedicated to delivering superb medical care,” says Vidor Friedman, MD, FACEP, president of ACEP. “During EMS Week, and through the year, we are proud to recognize EMS and fire professionals who fearlessly and tirelessly serve their communities and help patients and their families every day.”
Collins Intermediate School located in Scottsboro, Alabama has joined in on the celebration and demonstrated their appreciation to local EMS workers through their Honoring Our Local Heroes Service Project. The school chose the Highlands EMS team to receive their award during a ceremony at the school. EMS Director, Matthew West, accepted the award on behalf of the entire Highlands team.
This award came after an eventful weekend for the EMS team as they participated in a rescue mission hiking the Walls of Jericho for one rescue and swimming the Paint Rock River for another.
A spokesperson for Highlands Medical Center extended their thanks to Collins Intermediate School for recognizing these heroes.
