By Cinthia Rico [email protected] SECTION – Gabe Hilley finished with a game-high 17 points, and the Lions used a second-quarter run to pull away from the North Sand Mountain Bison for a 73-45 win in the varsity boys final at the Jackson County Tournament Saturday, January 22. The No. 1-seeded Section gained speed and outscored No. 2 Bison 51-36 in the third quarter en route to claiming the 2022 Jackson County Basketball Tournament title. A slam dunk from Patterson in the fourth brought the Lions 67-43, and with 50.9 seconds left on the clock, Aaron Waldrop dropped a two-pointer followed by a layup from Jared Reed and a buzzer score from Braden Arndt for a 73-45 win. Drake McCutchen finished with 12 points, Logan Patterson with 11, Alex Guinn had eight points, Braden Arndt and Dominik Blair with four apiece, Kaden Bradford with three, and Aaron Waldrop and Jared Reed each with two points. Patterson was named varsity boys tournament MVP. In the first half of play, Chandler Sullivan led the Bison capturing 10 of the 14 tallied points during the Friday, January 21, tournament semifinals in Section. Kelb Helton and Sullivan finished with 15 points apiece, Derek Bearden with seven, Konner Brown with six, and Nyle Poore with two points.
