The 2021 AHSAA State Cross Country Championship is finally in the books! Runners had to compete in the rain and foggy conditions, but it didn’t stop most of them from clocking personal records. Scottsboro’s girls’ team came in third place with 131 points, with Ally Campbell finishing in the top 10 at 18:56.32 (10th place). Emma Bradford finished in 23rd (19:51.66), Maddie Gossett came in right behind at 19:52.22, and Smith Bradford rounded out the top 50 in 36th place at 20:19.52. Scottsboro’s Evan Hill came in 2nd place out of 248 runners and clocked in at 15:32.43. Reese Bell finished in 5th place (15:47.38), Stephen Jones came in 10th place (15:56.13), Zach Avenel finished in 12th place (16:08.29), and Rex Green rounded out the top 20 in 18th place at 16:21.18. With the top finishes from the boys, Scottsboro’s boys’ team earned 1st place in the Class 6A Boys Championship with 47 points.
North Sand Mountain was represented by Lane Gamble, who finished 20th place at 18:01.97. Pisgah’s girls’ team top racer Nevaeh Evans finished in the top 10 (7th place) at 20:50.97. Kayana Stewart finished 37th place (22:30.80), and Rhylee Bell came in 41st (22:41.24). The Pisgah’s boys team saw Tristan Little finish in 24th place at 18:20.73 while Mason Overdear came in 27th (18:33.93) and Bob Johnson rounded out the top 50 in 41st place at 18:58.96. Seven other female and seven other male racers competed in the state meet as well. Fort Payne’s Maddie Jackson finished in 11th place at 19:05.57, with Anahi Barboza coming in right behind her at 19:08.92 in 13th place. Raven Fairley finished 32nd (20:12.76), Kyndal Hughes came in 44th (20:32.42), and Abigail Vega rounded out the top 50 for the Wildcats in 47th place at 20:33.42. The Fort Payne girls’ team placed fourth with 134 points in the State Championship 6A Team Race. Javier Medina Soto finished 109th place (18:06.82), and Ian Norman clocked in at 18:50.26 (150th place) for the Wildcat boys 6A race. Fyffe High School’s Dawson McCollum finished 23rd out of 163 racers and finished at 17:43.33. Plainview’s seventh-grade standout Jaxson Bruce finished with a personal record of 20:53.76 and came in 18th place. Alex Smith finished in 60th (19:33.21), Ephan Benjume just a second behind at 19:34.18, and Jon Mathis Arnold finished in 101st. Sylvania High School runners Jonna Graham and Molly Parr stayed close and finished in 83rd and 85th place.
