Just as the Pisgah Eagles were hopeful in a playoff run, Sulligent came to town and knocked the Eagles out after the first round 52-38 loss on Friday night. Class 2A Region 5’s No. 4-seed Sulligent used a rushing attack that the Eagles couldn’t defend. Sulligent finished with 455 total yards, of which 330 were rushing yards. Pisgah took the 8-0 lead, when Mason Holcomb threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jake Hendricks, just after the Eagles forced Sulligent to a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession. The Blue Devils answered with a 1-yard touchdown run and a 30-yard touchdown pass to take the 16-8 lead. Pisgah continued to play catch up throughout the rest of the half, but Sulligent took the 30-16 halftime lead.
The Eagles pulled within 38-30 after Grant Smith caused a fumble that set up a Pisgah Legion McCrary 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Sulligent’s defense held the Eagles on their next drive and added another score with 8:19 remaining in the game. Pisgah set up a four-minute touchdown drive featuring Parker Law’s 2-yard touchdown run that closed the deficit to 44-38 with 4:12 left on the clock. On the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles set up an onside kick but didn’t recover it and gave way to another Blue Devil score with 2:37 remaining. Pisgah threw an interception at the 1-yard line to end the game and seal the score. Holcomb threw for 13-of-21 for 263 yards and two touchdowns, while Law had three total touchdowns, rushed for 22 yards on six carries, and caught three passes for 33 yards. Hendricks had four catches for 99 yards while McCrary added 38 rushing yards on 14 carries. Pisgah ended their 2021 season with their best record since 2010 (7-4) and hosted their first playoff game since 2003.
