In the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 14, Jackson County law enforcement officers engaged in a high-speed chase that began in Jackson County and ended in DeKalb County.
According to DeKalb County Sheriff, Nick Welden, it was a long chase that exceeded 100 mph at various intervals.
Although DeKalb County law enforcement agents were unsure of the reason for the chase, public safety is their No. 1 priority in such cases, so when the chase crossed into DeKalb County Welden’s officers joined in. DeKalb County deputies finally ended the chase by blocking the driver in with their vehicles, two of which had to go to Carter’s Body Shop for repairs.
The driver who initiated the chase was Billy Blake, a 42-year-old who is very familiar to Welden and his officers. Past run-ins with DeKalb County law enforcement agents have resulted from charges that include: 3rd-degree burglary and 2nd-degree theft of property after breaking into Flat Rock Junior High School and Henagar Junior High School as well as charges for robbing various churches and storage units. When apprehended on Tuesday, Blake had a large, undisclosed amount of cash in his vehicle. The matter is currently still under investigation.
Sheriff Welden said, “I’m proud of how DeKalb County deputies ended the pursuit while keeping the community safe.”
