The Section Lions added another Class 2A, Area 16 Championship to their collection last Thursday with a 12-10 victory over the Fyffe Red Devils. The game was tied at five with Section batting in the bottom of the fifth when an error scored one run for Section. Despite falling behind by seven runs in the fifth inning, the Red Devils tried to fight back. Fyffe scored five runs in the failed comeback on a walk by Parker Godwin in the sixth, a single by Brody Dalton in the seventh, an error in the seventh, and a double by Koby Harris in the seventh. The Lions took an early lead in the second inning. Cole Woods singled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs. Fyffe knotted the game up at five in the top of the fourth inning, when Godwin singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. The Lions scored four runs in the seventh inning. The offensive onslaught by Fyffe was led by Dalton, Godwin, and Harris, all driving in runs in the frame. Trevier Porter toed the rubber for Section. He went five innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out one. Tanner Cowart was on the pitcher’s mound for Fyffe. He allowed seven hits and nine runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out nine and walking one. Dalton threw one and one-third innings out of the bullpen. Taylor Payne led the Lions with two hits in four at bats. Fyffe racked up 11 hits in the game. Caleb Lyles, Will Stephens, and Dalton all managed multiple hits for the Red Devils.
Section got their first win of the two-game series when the Lions defeated Fyffe 5-3 last Wednesday after taking another late-game lead. The game was tied at three with Section batting in the top of the sixth when Johnathan Carroll doubled on a 0-2 count, scoring two runs. In the first inning, the Red Devils got their offense started. Fyffe scored two runs when Ike Rowell homered. Taylor Payne led things off on the pitcher’s mound for the Lions. He lasted seven innings, allowing 11 hits and three runs while striking out five. Rowell was on the pitcher’s mound for Fyffe. He allowed two hits and one run over three and a third innings, striking out five. Justin Stiefel threw three and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen. Section launched one home run on the day. Payne went deep in the fifth inning. The Lions racked up seven hits on the day. Payne, Jacob Gentry, and Carroll all had multiple hits for Section. Carroll, Gentry, and Payne each collected two hits to lead the Lions. Section was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Gentry made the most plays with nine. Fyffe had 11 hits in the game. Stiefel, Lyles, and Eli Benefield all managed multiple hits for Fyffe. Stiefel went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Fyffe in hits.
