The North Jackson Chiefs fell in a close one to St. Paul II on Friday, September 20. St. Paul II rallied to overcome North Jackson at R.D. Hicks Stadium, in a game that was all offense. The Chiefs took an early lead when Dalton Morris hit Brady Cunningham for a 77-yard touchdown strike. North Jackson went for two and got it to go up 8-0. St. John Paul II answered when Seth Brown connected with Neil Schuetz. The Falcons were good on their 2-point conversion to tie the game 8-all. The Falcons took the lead over the Chiefs when Brown called his own number and raced 88 yards to the end zone. The PAT was good, and St. Paul II was up 15-8 at the end of one quarter of play.
The
Falcon lead was short-lived as Johnny Gilliam scored from the 20-yard line
early in the second quarter. Abraham
Castro’s PAT was good to tie the game at 15-all. The Falcons answered once again with a
nine-play drive, culminating in a touchdown strike from Brown to Sean
Zerkle. Zerkle followed that up with an
interception and another touchdown reception from Brown, this one from 70 yards
out. The Chiefs answered with two touchdowns
of their own in the last half of the second quarter. Carter Gass scored from the 1-yard line and
then connected with Kyle Posey for another score to send both teams to the
locker room tied at 29-all.
Brown
raced 12 yards for a touchdown early in the third to go back up 35-29. North Jackson came right back with a K.J.
Huckabee 2-yard touchdown to tie the game again. After a Cunningham interception set the
Chiefs up deep in Falcon territory, Morris found Luke Johnson for a touchdown
to put North Jackson on top 42-35.
Castro’s PAT was blocked. The
Chiefs scored once more on a 2-yard run by Gilliam. The 2-point conversion failed, and North
Jackson led 48-35 heading into the final quarter.
Unfortunately, St. Paul II rallied to overcome North Jackson in the fourth quarter. It took two fourth down touchdown passes and a too-close-for comfort PAT. Brown connected with Zerkle on fourth down and the PAT was good to bring the Falcons to with six points. Minutes later Brown connected with Nicholaus Stokes on fourth down to tie the ballgame. The Chiefs got a hand on the PAT, but it still managed to just clear the crossbar to put St. Paul II up 49-48. A Falcons interception with 1:08 left to play ended any chance the Chiefs had to mount a comeback.
