The Scottsboro Police Department received a complaint last week that a subject had been contacted by their office informing them they had a warrant and requesting they meet the caller at the courthouse to pay money to avoid jail.
This is common scam, but it’s easily avoided. Please remember the following:
The Scottsboro Police Department, nor any police department, will never request over the phone that you give money to avoid jail. If you have a warrant, you will either be arrested, or turn yourself in at the Scottsboro Police Department, not the courthouse.
If you are ever contacted by someone claiming to be with the Scottsboro Police Department informing you that have a warrant, feel free to tell them you’ll call back. Hang up, and call (256)574-4468 or (256)574-3333 and someone will be glad to confirm that and get you in touch with the appropriate person.
Please, do not pay attention to the caller ID. This particular call last week came from (256)574-2610. That is the number for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. It’s very simple to spoof a phone number and make it look legitimate, so ignore what your caller ID says.
If you have to pay money for fines to the Scottsboro Police Department, you will be required to pay it at the court magistrate’s office inside the police department. You will never pay it to a person in the parking lot, much less at the courthouse.
Please be very diligent in taking care of your money, and always verify. Once your money is gone, the likelihood of getting it back is very slim.
