Types And Shadows Part 5
The last four weeks I have been discussing different types and shadows in the Bible. Remember according to Easton’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary, “The word “type” is generally used to denote a resemblance between something present and something future, which is called the “antitype.” While there are some differences when I use the words “types”, “shadows”, “figure”, or parallels I am basically referring to the same.
This week I am discussing the parallels
between Jesus and one of the most beloved kings of Israel – David. Most of us know David from his victory over
Goliath, recorded in 1 Samuel 17. David
is also credited with writing a majority of the Book of Psalms, which is quoted
more in the New Testament than any other part of the Old Testament.
David and Jesus were both from
Bethlehem. David was a shepherd and
protected the herd from anything that would harm them. Jesus said, “I am the good
shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his
life for the sheep”, John
10:11. David had a friend in
Jonathan that risk his own life to help David.
1 Samuel 20:4,“Then
said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it
for thee”. John the Baptist’s thoughts
about Jesus were very similarly as he said in John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must
decrease”.
Both David and Jesus had brothers
that did not support them. However the
lack of support from family did not distract them from the mission they had to
do. David’s responds to his brothers in 1 Samuel 17:29,“And David
said, What have I now done? Is there
not a cause”? Jesus responds in Luke 13:34,“O
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are
sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen
doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not”!
David was a man after God’s own
heart, and God made a covenant with him that is fulfilled in the Lord Jesus
Christ. 2 Samuel 7:16, “And thine house and thy kingdom shall be
established for ever before thee: thy
throne shall be established for ever”. Luke
1:31b-33,“…and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the
Son of the Highest: and the Lord God
shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob
for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end”.
I invite you to accept Jesus Christ as your
personal Savior today – your life will never be the same.
