By Cinthia Rico WOODVILLE – The Skyline basketball teams ended last weekend on a high note at Woodville High School’s Willard Townson Gymnasium.
The Vikings swept the 2024 Jackson County Tournament last week, claiming the boys’ and girls’ championship titles.
Under head coach Craig McGill, the Lady Vikings won their second consecutive championship. The Lady Vikings edged Pisgah 48-45 in a thrilling final matchup.
Kaina King led the Lady Vikings in double-digit scoring with 14 points, Blakely Stuckey added 13, Brinlee Potts had 8, Sage Lewis finished with 5, Jade Yeager and Jaslynn Wilkinson each added 3, and Pearl Bellomy chipped in 2 for Skyline.
With their defense holding the Lady Eagles to just five points in the first quarter, the Vikings got off to a quick start, scoring 14 points.
In the second frame, Piper Anderson opened the scoring for Pisgah with two FTs, cutting the lead to 14-7. Skyline’s Brinlee Potts answered with a corner 3-pointer shot, and Jaslynn Wilkinson closed out the half with a buzzer-beater shot, extending the Vikings’ advantage to 13 points.
Pisgah entered the second half with determination as the Eagles rallied to close the distance.
Paisley Patalas and Ashton Childress started the Eagles rally, leading to a 33-27 end-of-third-period score. With the minutes ticking away, players pushed themselves to the limit as the two teams fought to the wire, with both teams refusing to let up.
Skyline emerged victorious in a 48-45 final after trading free throw hoops with Pisgah players, who made every second count.
Campbell Barron led the Pisgah Eagles with a team-high 14 points, Ashton Childress put up 12, Paisley Patalas added 9, Piper Anderson had 4, and Sarah Grace Gamble and Madeline Flammia each chipped in 3.
The all-tournament team consists of: Skyline’s Kaina King (MVP), Sage Lewis, Blakely Stucky; Pisgah’s Piper Anderson, Campbell Barron; NSM’s Kamryn Patterson, Kayden Reyes; Section’s Millie Gentry, Lluvia Soria; North Jackson’s Calena Coffey; and Woodville’s Anna Robertson.
Boys The Skyline and Pisgah varsity boys demonstrated an impressive performance at the 2024 JCT championship last weekend.
Bryant Kennamer and Zeier Golden led the Vikings in double-digit scoring with 16 points; Will Avans added 13; and Scott York tallied 10. Jake Cloud finished with 6 points, Kristian King had 5, and Jayten Prince chipped in 3.
Skyline was ahead 12–10 after the first quarter and 29–26 at the half.
The Vikings were ahead 36–32 when Kennamer took over with less than three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Skyline blew open the game in the final quarter as Kennemer converted a 3-point play after drawing contact on a layup with 50.8 seconds left in the quarter before capping the quarter with a step-back, buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Vikings a 50-36 lead.
Luke Gilbert paced Pisgah with a team-high 16 points, Mason Holcomb added 9, Jackson Smalley tallied 7, Jakob Kirby and Brodie Overdear each had 5, Legion McCrary finished with 3 and Jeff Jeffery and Caleb Jenkins both chipped in two.
The all-tournament team consists of: Skyline’s Bryant Kennamer (MVP), Zeier Golden, Scott York; Pisgah’s Luke Gilbert, Brodie Overdear; NSM’s Brody Helton, Blake Maples; Woodville’s Sam Peek, Trey Stone, North Jackson’s Bodie Burnette; and Section’s Jackson LeRoy.
