SCOTTSBORO – Several individuals were recognized for serving Jackson County at the October 23, 2023, Jackson County Commission meeting. Senator Steve Livingston was also presented with a plaque for his legislative work that has benefited counties across the state. Executive Director of County Commissions of Alabama Sonny Brassfield and Assistant Executive Director of County Commissions of Alabama Lauren Hodge were at the meeting to make the presentation to Senator Livingston. Hodge said, “This session alone, Senator Livingston sponsored one of our priority pieces of legislation. That legislation came about through conversations with our county engineers statewide. They brought this issue to our attention, and it became one of our legislative priorities. This issue was there are some county roads that the county maintains and holds the liability for that run through incorporated municipal limits. Before the law that Senator Livingston passed, the municipality maintained the authority to set the speed limit on a county-maintained road that it is liable for. This law shifts that power of setting the speed limit to the county.” Hodge added, “This was a very positive benefit to all our county engineers. That is why we wanted to come tonight and recognize Senator Livingston. Beyond this piece of legislation, Senator Livingston has an open-door policy for us. He is a tried and true friend to county government.” County Commission Chairman Nance then recognized county employees who had served the county for ten years or more. He thanked them for their dedication to Jackson County and for the contribution they make each day. The Commission presented those employees with Longevity Awards. Nance presented County Administrator Bob Manning with a ten-year service award. Bobby Wilbanks, Jackson County Sheriff’s Patrol Lieutenant, earned a fifteen-year service award, and Rachel Metcalf, Investigative Clerk, received her twenty-year award. Public Works employee Rickey Adkins also received an award for twenty years of service. Two other employees earned awards but were not present to receive them. They were Veronica Woodall, with ten years of service, and Shannon Paschal, with twenty years. Michele Willis was presented with the 2023 Jackson County Sentinel People’s Choice Award for the Best of the Best of Jackson County 2023 in the category of County Employee. Willis is the Jackson County Commission Personnel Director. Congratulations to everyone honored.
